ELEC – Group of Wise Persons (ELEC-GWP)

Introduction

The European Union is increasingly stepping up to the forefront of the many different international challenges that we face. In recent years, the EU has closely coordinated our reaction to COVID-19, the effects of climate change and the impact of the war in Ukraine.

Within today’s integrated economic and political environment, European cooperation is becoming ever more important and effective. At the same time, it is generally well recognized that existing governance structures as well as practical and political obstacles, still leave sufficient room for further improvement in the functioning of the EU.

The European League for Economic Cooperation (ELEC) is an informal network that tries to make a positive contribution to the main strategic economic discussions within the EU. It brings together intellectual power and experience from academics, financial market participants and public representatives to share their thoughts and discuss the relevant issues from different perspectives. ELEC stimulates open debate and acts in complete independence from national or private interests, public authorities, or any other pressure groups.

The GWP is the successor of the so-called “monetary group of ELEC”. The GWP will focus on broader economic topics. Minutes will be drafted anonymously and distributed to the participants of GWP meetings.

Who are the representatives of the GWP?

The GWP brings together a select group of European academics, policy makers, supervisory authorities, financial market participants and (former) public representatives to discuss the relevant issues from different perspectives. ELEC stimulates open debate and acts in complete independence from any public or private interests.

The selected number of European members and speakers are providing their views and policy papers on relevant topical policy issues. Although not all members subscribe to every word of the reports, and they participate in their private capacity.
